I’ll blame graduate school and a teaching day job for this delay to Part 4 of my series of long update posts. Productive, engaging, and helpful as they are, they also sapped time away from writing blog posts. Yet there was plenty of time to draw!
On the sunny side, I’m also going on holiday very soon, and so here comes a lot of things done this year before I hop to that. Maybe I’ll turn this to a travel blog as well whilst I’m out. XD
Untitled (New York with C. Yuen)
~2 Jan 2022. Sketchbook.
A sitting pose meets some NYC-inspired background elements. I guess her adventure’s in central Queens.
Untitled (Inspector Derp-It)
4 Jan 2022. Sketchbook.
Character design practice. What’s up with the outfit and cricket paddle, anyway?
Untitled (EaterOfPi birthday present)
7 Jan 2022. Sketchbook.
EaterOfPi’s OC Pippi was drawn as a plush for my character Camille. It was a fun drawing to do, and let me explore Sketchbook’s pencil tools. Quite effective considering traditional materials experience. (I put the wrong date on the actual drawing itself, oops.)
Untitled (Sunny)
7 Jan 2022. Sketchbook.
Marker-pen combination attempt. I kinda like the shading on this one, even if it’s a tad too saturated.
Rough Rider Suri Paca
12 Jan 2022. Sketchbook, minor Krita edits.
Inspired by a conversation with AcesRockz, an American Kemono Friends illustrator. Pose and outfit were very much inspired by Lucky Luke comics.
Untitled (Attempt at Moon Style)
15 Jan 2022. Sketchbook.
An attempt at a friend’s anime-inspired style. However, whilst his style uses pixel art and heavy mouse use, I drew by hand instead.
Domino’s Bizarre Adventure feat. Hatsune Miku
18 Jan 2022. Krita.
Jojo-inspired Domino’s memes. I blame Moon for having a bunch of Scott drawings in private doodling streams.
Untitled (Pippi Meets Purple Tentacle)
28 Jan 2022. Sketchbook.
How did this mashup occur?! Ah whatever, this was a very fun one to draw. Whether Pi considers his OC Pippi to have a fear of evil tentacles of not, I don’t know.
Tetodo (Mikado cover) (SNES-like sample limits)
2 Feb 2022. OpenMPT, Utau.
Some sort of practice with the eurobeat meme song Mikado as a base. I tried to get the entire tracker file to under 64KB; despite using MPTM and FLAC samples, I think I succeeded to give a SNES-like feel to this cover. Using only 8 channels as per a SNES was also fun.
The hard part was getting the voice samples in with a low enough sample rate to fit, but a high enough quality to understand. Well, lack of RAM made many SNES games use short, muffled voices, so there is that. XD
(This is strictly for non-commercial use, and I’ll cite US fair use laws if need be. I only did this for fun and learning, and all rights belong to song’s original owners.)
Untitled (Clippy Pleads)
4 Feb 2022. Sketchbook.
Part of a mishmash of other sketches.
Untitled (Pirate Cat)
20 Feb 2022. Sketchbook.
Sillier, more light-hearted cartooning. What’s not to like?
Untitled (School Vacation)
11 Mar 2022. Sketchbook.
Drawn during a workday before the end of class. The skeleton in gown and with visor was an actual prop.
Untitled (Camille)
26 Mar 2022. Sketchbook.
another day, another sketch
Untitled (Oinari in the Alleyway)
28 Mar 2022. Sketchbook.
I don’t think the Wrap Assassin is a great choice for beating up thugs in sleazy streets, eh?
Untitled (Cross Cellval)
31 Mar 2022. Sketchbook.
Quick doodle. This and the last two images were resized and sent to a Drawpile canvas.
JapariWrestle 2022 (YT link)
1 Apr 2022. Resolve, Cakewalk, WWE 2k19.
Now 100% edited on Resolve instead of using Shotcut! It mostly worked to my advantage in that working was much faster than via Shotcut, but it was also far less flexible with some formats not being supported. I still had to use Cakewalk for the audio track as Resolve did not like my audio plugins. There wasn’t much time to re-record, however, thanks to course workload.
There are some combing artefacts from the 1080p->1440p upscaling, but whatever. Yet again, this is strictly a community thing and should not be redistributed elsewhere nor sold.
Untitled (digital marker test)
1 Apr 2022. Sketchbook.
A use of digital markers and multiply layers. Worked out rather well in hindsight for shading.
Untitled (Captain Spaceboy meets catgirl)
1 Apr 2022. Sketchbook.
Doodling time. (Also get outta here Scott, chain pizza has no place in an ex-NYCer’s heart!)
Dial-A-Pirate Is On Hold
12 Apr 2022. Sketchbook.
More light, casual cartooning. Is Guybrush on the other end of the line?
Untitled (schoolwork)
22 Apr 2022. Sketchbook.
A few sketches, some of which were inspired by another sheila’s cutesy drawings.
Untitled (Suzie Demands No Idle TCs)
30 Apr 2022. Sketchbook.
A practice of 1:3 or similar head-to-body ratios. Suzie was added as a result of a discussion about Kirby, a series I know nothing about.
Untitled (Late-night telly)
2 May 2022. Sketchbook.
Practising with darker situations and coloured lighting/shadows. Even if it’s incomplete I kinda like how this was turning out.
Untitled (boredom at work)
10-12 May 2022. Graphite and coloured pencils, brush and fountain pen.
Whoa, a traditional work! That’s rather rare since I got that tablet! XD
But I have to say, traditional is still much more fun to pick up and play around with, even if digital is far more flexible.
Untitled (Inari in bikini)
23 May 2022. Sketchbook.
Yes, I still draw saucier things, but almost all of those will remain private and unshared on this website (and no, I still don’t take commissions). This risqué bit, however, can go online.
Beerturong
24 May 2022. Sketchbook.
Random ideas came up together again to result in this. I could use a beer now, but just one will be plenty. I had fun with this either way, sober or not.
Untitled (Basil)
31 May 2022. Sketchbook.
I had one of the Battlefield games’ cover art in mind whilst attempting new colouring techniques, which were partially successful. Also I had a background in mind with Omori looming over Basil, but that didn’t happen yet.
Untitled (Where’s My Ride?)
3 Jun 2022. Sketchbook.
Improvised rapid sketch of a city kerb and a few figures. Not too shabby for a rushed proof-of-concept.
Outfit Swap
8 Jun 2022. Sketchbook.
Pippi and Camille share similar palettes, so as a fun exercise, I swapped their outfits. I’m rather pleased with the result, though I think I made Camille’s bust bigger than I’d like. XD
